Deal or No Deal facts for kids
Deal or No Deal is a super popular game show that started in the Netherlands in 2000. It was created by John de Mol. This exciting show has been played in over 40 countries around the world!
How the Game Works
In Deal or No Deal, one player, called the contestant, tries to win a lot of money. They play against a "banker" and are helped by a host. The game uses many briefcases or boxes, and each one has a different amount of money inside. The player doesn't know how much is in each case at the start.
The game begins when the contestant picks one special case. This case's value stays a secret until the very end of the game. Then, the contestant starts opening the other cases, one by one. Each time a case is opened, the money inside is shown, and that amount is removed from the game.
After a few cases are opened, the mysterious banker calls to make an offer. This offer is a certain amount of money for the contestant to stop playing and take the deal. If the contestant says "yes" to the offer, the game ends, and they win that money. If they say "no," they keep playing and open more cases. The game continues until only two cases are left: the one the contestant picked at the start and one other. At this point, the banker makes a final offer. If the contestant says "no" to the last offer, they win whatever money is inside their very first chosen case.
The banker's offers change throughout the game. They depend on which money amounts are still left in the unopened cases. The banker tries to make offers that are tricky, especially early in the game, to make it more exciting. Sometimes, near the end, the banker might even offer more than what's usually expected to be in the remaining cases!
The biggest prize ever offered (and accepted) on the original Dutch show was €1,495,000, which was about $1,737,250 at the time. This happened on November 13, 2005. The contestant took the deal, and it was a good choice because their own case only had €1,000! Only a few people have ever won the absolute top prize on any version of the show.
