Arthur Dale Trendall (born March 28, 1909, died November 13, 1995) was a famous expert from New Zealand. He was an art historian and a classical archaeologist. He became very well-known for figuring out which artists made ancient Greek pots. His important work on these pots from places like Apulia won him many awards.

His Life and Work

Arthur Trendall studied at the University of Otago and the University of Cambridge. He worked at the University of Sydney and the Australian National University. At the Australian National University, he helped lead the university. From 1969 until he passed away, he worked at La Trobe University in Melbourne.

Secret Wartime Work

In January 1940, during World War II, Arthur Trendall helped the Australian Army. He and some friends from the University of Sydney started studying Japanese secret codes. Other people helping were mathematicians Thomas Gerald Room and Richard Lyons, and expert Athanasius Treweek.

In May 1941, Room and Treweek met with intelligence officers. They agreed that Trendall's group would work with Eric Nave, a Japanese code expert. They moved to Melbourne to work at a special intelligence office.

After the war started, they worked for FRUMEL. This was a joint American-Australian intelligence team. Later, the US Navy took over FRUMEL. Civilians like Trendall's group were then sent back to their university jobs.

Amazing Discoveries

Arthur Trendall was incredibly important in the world of ancient art. He helped organize over 20,000 ancient Greek vases. These vases came from places like Sicily, South Italy, and Campania.

He could tell where each vase was made and when. He also figured out which artists or groups of artists painted them. His work helped everyone understand these ancient artworks much better. He made smart observations about what the vases showed. This included myths, religious practices, daily life, and theater.
