Arthur Fitzgerald Folwell (born 23 September 1904 – died 14 October 1966) was a famous rugby league player and coach. He was born in England but became an Australian star. Arthur played for the Australian national team and the New South Wales state team. He played his club games for the Newtown team in Sydney. Later, he became their coach and led them to a big win in 1943.
Playing Rugby League
Arthur Folwell was a talented player. In 1933, he was chosen for the Australian team that toured Great Britain. This tour was called the Kangaroo tour. He played in two important "Test matches" against Great Britain. He also played in many other games during that tour.
Coaching Success
After his playing days, Arthur became a coach. He coached the Newtown team for three seasons, from 1942 to 1944. These were during the time of the Second World War.
His most famous moment as a coach was in 1943. He led the Newtown team to win the Grand Final! This was a huge achievement for the team. In 1944, his last year as coach, Newtown made it to the Grand Final again. However, they lost that game to the Balmain team.
Life After Playing
After coaching, Arthur Folwell continued to be involved in rugby league. He helped pick players for the New South Wales and Australian teams. He did this during the 1950s and early 1960s.
Arthur passed away at his home in Empire Bay when he was 62 years old. His grandson, Greg Pierce, also became a rugby league player.
Arthur Folwell was a very important player for the Newtown Jets. He was even named as the hooker in their "Team of the Century" (1908–2007). This means he was considered one of the best players in the team's history.
