The Arthur G. Rocheford Building is an old commercial building located at 1717 Vinton Street in South Omaha, Nebraska. It was built in 1913. This building was originally home to Arthur G. Rocheford's plumbing company, called Globe Plumbing. Mr. Rocheford himself was in charge of building it. In 2006, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.

What is the History of the Rocheford Building?

Arthur G. Rocheford came from a family that knew a lot about construction. His father, William M. Rocheford, owned a company called Rocheford & Gould. They made bricks and built many things. Arthur chose to build his plumbing business close to his family's brickyard and home.

Even though his father's company changed in 1906, William Rocheford kept working with his sons. They built rental properties and other larger projects. Because Arthur grew up around construction, it made sense that he would manage the building of his own business.

What Does the Building Look Like?

The Arthur G. Rocheford Building is made of red bricks. It is built in a style called Italianate. This style was popular for buildings in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The building still has its original features on the first floor. These include cast-iron columns and a double entrance. Above the doors, there are special windows called transom windows. The building also has a small tin cornice at the top. This is a decorative molding. Inside, the main floor has oak wood floors and a special pressed tin ceiling.

What Businesses Have Been Here?

Over the years, many different businesses have used the Arthur G. Rocheford Building. Besides Arthur G. Rocheford's plumbing company, it has been home to:

  • A jeweler
  • A mail order business
  • A shoemaker
  • A dry cleaner
  • A painting business
  • A carpet dealer

More recently, the building was the main office for Emerging Terrain. This was a group that worked on community projects and city planning. They sold the building in 2014. Today, the building is home to DeOld Andersen Architecture. This is a company that designs buildings and city spaces.
