Early Life and Family
Arthur was born with the name Arthur Hill. He later changed his last name to Hill-Trevor in 1759. He was the second son of Michael Hill, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP) and a special advisor to the King (a Privy Councillor). Arthur's mother was Anne Trevor. His grandfather on his mother's side was Sir John Trevor, a very important statesman in the 1600s. Arthur's older brother was Trevor Hill, who became the 1st Viscount Hillsborough.
Political Journey
Arthur Hill-Trevor began his political career in November 1715. He represented the area of Hillsborough in the Irish House of Commons. This was like the main law-making body in Ireland at the time. From 1727, he represented County Down.
He continued serving in the House of Commons until 1766. On February 17, 1766, he was given special titles: Viscount Dungannon and Baron Hill of Olderfleet. These titles were part of the Peerage of Ireland, which meant he became a member of the Irish House of Lords. This was a higher part of the Irish Parliament. Before this, in 1736, he was appointed High Sheriff of Down, a key local official. In 1750, he also joined the Privy Council of Ireland, becoming another important advisor to the government.
Family and Children
Arthur Hill-Trevor was married twice. His first wife was Barbara Deane, who sadly passed away young. She was the daughter of Joseph Deane, a chief judge in Ireland.
In 1737, he married his second wife, Anne Stafford. They had three children together. Their only son, also named Arthur Hill Trevor, passed away before his father. Because of this, the title of Viscount Dungannon later went to Arthur's grandson, Arthur Hill-Trevor, 2nd Viscount Dungannon.
One of his daughters, Anne, married Garret Wesley, who became the 1st Earl of Mornington. This made Lord Dungannon the grandfather of the famous 1st Duke of Wellington, a very important military leader. All three of his children had their own families.
