Arthur Paunzen (born February 4, 1890 – died August 9, 1940) was a talented artist from Austria. He was Jewish and known for his etchings, engravings, and illustrations.

About His Life

Arthur was born in Vienna, Austria, on February 4, 1890. His parents, Leopold and Hermine, were Jewish.

He studied art in Vienna with Ludwig Koch. He also went to France to study at a famous art school called Académie Julian, where Jean-Pierre Laurens was his teacher. Later, he traveled all over Italy to learn more about art and buildings.

In 1918, around the time his art started being shown to the public, he married Cornelia Westreich in Vienna. She was also Jewish.

Arthur loved music, and it inspired many of his artworks. He created pictures that showed music as symbolic images. He even made a series of etchings based on Gustav Mahler's famous song cycle, "Das Lied von der Erde".

He was also interested in books. He created a series of etchings that showed characters from Dostoevsky's well-known novel, Crime and Punishment. One of these characters was Raskolnikov.

In 1938, when Hitler took control of Austria, Arthur and his wife moved to Great Britain to be safe.

Final Years and Passing

In May 1940, during World War II, the British government held all German and Austrian citizens in the country. Arthur was among them. He passed away on August 9, 1940, at the Central Internment Camp in Douglas, Isle of Man.

His friend, the composer Hans Gál, was also at the camp and kept a detailed diary. He wrote that Arthur died from a serious lung infection called bronchial pneumonia. He also mentioned that the camp's medical staff did not provide enough care.

Arthur Paunzen is buried in the Jewish section of the Douglas Borough Cemetery.

Many of his artworks are now part of important collections. You can find his pieces at the British Museum in London, the Stockholm Engraving Collection at the Nationalmuseum in Sweden, and the Albertina Museum in Vienna.
