Arthur Charles Pedley was an important British civil servant who worked for the government for many years. He was born in July 1859 and passed away on 16 December 1943. He received special awards for his hard work and dedication.

Early Life and Education

Arthur Charles Pedley was born in 1859. His father was Matthew Pedley, from a town called Chatteris in Cambridgeshire, England. His mother was Elizabeth Wayman. Arthur went to school at Bedford Modern School, where he received his education.

Working for the Government

In 1877, when he was about 18 years old, Arthur Pedley started his career working for the government. His first job was in Dublin, Ireland, at an office called the Local Government Board for Ireland. This office helped manage local issues in Ireland.

Just two years later, in 1879, he moved to a different government department called the War Office. This was a very important office in London that was in charge of the British army. Arthur Pedley spent the rest of his working life there.

He worked his way up through different roles. In 1900, he became an Acting Assistant Principal in the Pay Division, which handled payments. He was promoted to Assistant Principal in 1902 and then to Principal in 1913. He retired from his government job in 1919.

Special Awards

Arthur Pedley received two special honours for his excellent service to the country.

  • In 1905, he was given the title of Companion of the Imperial Service Order (ISO). This award is given to civil servants who have done outstanding work.
  • In 1920, he was also made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB). This is another high honour given for great service, especially in government or military roles.
