Arthur Blennerhassett Rowan (born 1800, died 1861) was an important person in the Church of Ireland. He was a church leader called an Archdeacon of Ardfert from 1856 to 1861. He was also known for writing about old things and history, like an "antiquarian writer."

Life

Arthur Rowan was born in County Kerry, Ireland, probably in Tralee. His father, William Rowan, was a local leader in Tralee. His mother was Letitia Denny.

He went to school in Ennis and then studied at Trinity College, Dublin when he was 16. He earned his first degree in 1821.

In 1824, Arthur Rowan became a priest. He worked for 30 years in Blennerville, County Kerry. He also started and edited a magazine called Kerry Magazine. This magazine was published for a few years and focused on local history and old objects.

In 1854, Rowan became the rector (head priest) of Kilgobbin. On March 31, 1856, he was promoted to Archdeacon of Ardfert. He passed away on August 12, 1861, near Tralee. He was buried in Ballyseedy churchyard.

Works

Arthur Rowan wrote several books and articles. Here are some of his published works:

  • Spare Minutes of a Minister, a book of poems published in 1837.
  • Letters from Oxford, written under the pen name Ignotus in 1843. These letters were about his visit to Oxford in 1840.
  • Romanism in the Church, published in 1847.
  • Newman's Popular Fallacies considered, a series of letters published in 1852.
  • Lake Lore, or an Antiquarian Guide to some of the Ruins and Recollections of Killarney, a guide to historical places around Killarney, published in 1853.
  • First Fruits of an Early Gathered Harvest, which he edited in 1854.
  • Casuistry and Conscience, two talks he gave.
  • Gleanings after Grand Tourists, published in 1856. This book was about his trip around Europe in 1849.
  • Brief Memorials of the Case and Conduct of T. C. D., published in 1858. This book was about the history of Trinity College Dublin.
  • Life of the Blessed Franco, a translation from an old story, published in 1858.
  • The Old Countess of Desmond, a book about a famous historical figure, published in 1860.

Family

Arthur Rowan married Alicia Thompson. They had two sons, William and Arthur Edward Denny. They also had two daughters, including Anne Margaret Rowan, who became a writer and historian, and Ora.
