Arthurlie Football Club is a Scottish football team from Barrhead, a town in East Renfrewshire. They play their home games at Dunterlie Park. Arthurlie is known for playing in the league. The club was part of the Scottish Football League for two periods, from 1901 to 1915 and again from 1923 to 1929. They have also won the important Scottish Junior Cup twice, in 1937 and 1998.

Club History

Early Years and Senior Football

Arthurlie Football Club was started in 1874. For many years, they played as a "senior" team, which means they were part of the main professional football leagues. This lasted until 1929. The club did very well in the Scottish Cup, reaching the quarter-finals three years in a row, starting from 1880–81. One famous early game was in 1896–97, when Arthurlie beat Celtic 4–2 in the Scottish Cup. Celtic got their revenge the next season, winning 7–0. The two teams met again in 1929 for Arthurlie's last Scottish Cup match as a senior club, with Celtic winning 5–1.

Joining the Scottish Football League

In 1891, Arthurlie helped create the Scottish Football Federation and won its first championship. They then joined the Scottish Football Alliance in 1893. In 1901, Arthurlie became a member of the Scottish Football League. They played in the Second Division and had their best finish in 1906–07, coming in joint second place. The Second Division stopped during the First World War in 1915.

Arthurlie did not rejoin the league right away after the war. They waited until 1923 to join the new Third Division. They immediately won the Third Division championship in their first season! After that, they had four good seasons in the Second Division. However, money problems forced the club to leave the league in the 1928–29 season.

Becoming a Junior Club and Cup Success

A new Arthurlie club, with the same name, joined the "Junior" football grade in the early 1930s. Junior football is a different level of football in Scotland. They quickly found success, winning the Scottish Junior Cup in 1937. They beat Kirkintilloch Rob Roy 5–1 in the final, with 23,000 fans watching at Celtic Park.

Arthurlie reached the final two more times but lost. They lost to Fauldhouse United in 1946 and to their local rivals Pollok in 1981. But in 1998, they won the trophy again! They beat Pollok 4–0 in the final, getting revenge for their earlier loss. Goals were scored by Mark McLaughlin, Johnny Millar, Steven Convery, and Steven Nugent.

Recent Achievements

In the early 2000s, Arthurlie was the first team to win the second tier of the Junior Super League in 2003. They stayed in the top division, the West of Scotland Super League Premier Division, for 15 seasons. In 2018, they moved to the SJFA West Region Championship.

The club's most recent trophy win was in 2015. They won the West of Scotland Junior Cup, beating Kilwinning Rangers 4–2. Gary Smith scored three goals, and Ryan McGregor scored one. This was Arthurlie's sixth time winning this cup. Only Auchinleck Talbot (12 wins) and Irvine Meadow (9 wins) have won it more often.

Club Management

On July 18, 2022, Craig Palmer became the new manager of Arthurlie. He is in charge of leading the team.
