Arthurlie Football Club is a Scottish football team from Barrhead, East Renfrewshire. They play their home games at Dunterlie Park. The club has a long history in Scottish football. They even played in the top Scottish Football League for two different periods, from 1901 to 1915 and again from 1923 to 1929. Arthurlie has also won the famous Scottish Junior Cup twice, in 1937 and 1998.

History of Arthurlie FC

Arthurlie FC was founded in 1874. For many years, until 1929, they played as a "senior" side. This means they were part of the main professional football leagues in Scotland.

Early Days and Scottish Cup Matches

In their early years, Arthurlie did very well in the Scottish Cup. They reached the quarter-finals (the last eight teams) for three years in a row, starting in 1880–81. A famous early result was when they beat Celtic 4–2 in the Scottish Cup in 1896–97. Celtic got their revenge the next season, winning 7–0! The two clubs met again in Arthurlie's last Scottish Cup game as a senior team in 1929, with Celtic winning 5–1.

Playing in the Leagues

Arthurlie was one of the founding teams of the Scottish Football Federation in 1891. They won that competition in its first year! Later, they joined the Scottish Football League in 1901. They played in the Second Division and finished as high as joint second in 1906–07.

The Second Division stopped during the First World War in 1915. Arthurlie didn't rejoin the league right away. They waited until 1923 to join the new Third Division. They immediately won the Third Division championship! After that, they had four good seasons in the Second Division.

However, money problems forced the club to leave the league in 1929. They had six games left to play in the 1928–29 season. Since they had already played all the teams fighting for promotion, their results were allowed to count.

Becoming a Junior Club

A club with the same name, Arthurlie, joined the "Junior" football league in the early 1930s. They quickly found success! They won the Scottish Junior Cup in 1937. They beat Kirkintilloch Rob Roy 5–1 in the final. A huge crowd of 23,000 people watched the game at Celtic Park.

They reached the final two more times but lost. Once to Fauldhouse United in 1946, and then to their local rivals Pollok in 1981. But they got their revenge in 1998! They lifted the trophy again, beating Pollok 4–0 in the final. Goals came from Mark McLaughlin, Johnny Millar, Steven Convery, and Steven Nugent.

In the modern Junior Super League era, Arthurlie was the first team to win the second-tier West of Scotland Super League First Division in 2003. They stayed in the top West of Scotland Super League Premier Division for 15 seasons! Then they were relegated to the SJFA West Region Championship in 2018.

Recent Success and Managers

The club's most recent trophy win was the West of Scotland Junior Cup in 2015. They beat Kilwinning Rangers 4–2 in the final. Gary Smith scored three goals, and Ryan McGregor scored one. This was Arthurlie's sixth win in this cup. Only Auchinleck Talbot (12 wins) and Irvine Meadow (9 wins) have won it more often.

The team has had several managers recently. Duncan Sinclair, a former Scotland Junior international player, managed the team from June 2018. Andy McFadyen became the new manager on April 15, 2020. Then, on July 18, 2022, Craig Palmer was appointed as the new manager.
