Artificiality facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Artificiality means something is made by humans, not found in nature. Think of a plastic toy versus a tree. A toy is artificial because people made it. A tree is natural because it grew on its own.

What "Artificial" Can Mean

Sometimes, "artificial" can sound negative. It might mean something is fake or not real. The ancient Greek thinker Aristotle once said that natural things are more convincing. He thought artificial things might make people feel tricked. He compared it to someone mixing your wine for you. It feels like they have a secret plan.

But "artificial" isn't always bad! It can also show how clever humans are. We can create amazing things that work like natural ones. For example, an artificial heart helps people live. Artificial intelligence (AI) lets computers think and learn.

Herbert A. Simon, an expert in AI, noted that some artificial things copy nature. They might use the same materials or completely different ones. He explained the difference between "artificial" and "synthetic." An artificial sweetener is artificial because it tastes sweet but isn't sugar. A lab-made sugar that is exactly like natural sugar is synthetic.

Some thinkers even believe that everything is natural. They say that because humans are part of nature, everything we make is also a product of natural laws.

Telling Natural from Artificial

Usually, people can tell the difference between natural and artificial things. Even computers can sometimes do this. Artificial places often look very neat and organized. They have regular shapes and patterns that stay the same. Natural places tend to be more uneven and change over time.

However, if you look closely, natural things also have patterns. Scientists and artists can study these patterns. Then, they can copy them to make artificial things look more natural.

For example, computer artists use special programs called automata. These programs can create organic-looking textures. This helps make 3D objects in games or movies look more realistic.
