Arturo Ripstein y Rosen (born December 13, 1943) is a famous film director and screenwriter from Mexico. He is often called the "Godfather of independent Mexican cinema" because of his important work. His movies are known for being serious and thoughtful, often telling stories about lonely people.

Ripstein has won many awards for his films. He has won the Ariel Award, Mexico's most important film award, nine times. In 1997, he received the National Prize for Arts and Sciences for his work in Mexican movies. He was only the second filmmaker ever to get this special honor, after the famous director Luis Buñuel.

Early Life and Influences

Arturo Ripstein was born in Mexico City on December 13, 1943. His father, Alfredo Ripstein, was a film producer, so Arturo grew up around movies. He is of Polish-Jewish heritage.

Because of his family, he became interested in making films when he was young. As a teenager, he even made his own short movies. He was a big fan of the director Luis Buñuel and later became his student. Buñuel was a great teacher and mentor to Ripstein for many years.

Career as a Director

Ripstein began his career by working as an uncredited assistant director for Luis Buñuel on the movie The Exterminating Angel in 1962. This experience helped him learn a lot about filmmaking.

In 1965, he directed his first full-length movie, Tiempo de morir. The story was written by two famous Latin-American authors, Carlos Fuentes and Gabriel García Márquez. This started a pattern for Ripstein, who often worked with well-known writers to create his films.

Many of Ripstein's films explore serious themes and feature characters facing difficult situations. His movies often have a unique visual style. Three of his films were chosen to compete for the top prize at the famous Cannes Film Festival.

Personal Life

Ripstein is married to Paz Alicia Garciadiego, who is also a screenwriter. They have worked together on many films. The couple has two children. In 2003, both Ripstein and his wife were granted honorary Spanish citizenship.
