Projects Linear city (1892)

Arturo Soria y Mata (1844-1920) was a famous Spanish urban planner. An urban planner is someone who designs how cities should grow and be organized. Arturo Soria is best known for his big idea called the Linear City. This idea changed how people thought about city design.

He started studying to become a civil engineer, but he did not finish his studies. Even so, his ideas about cities became very important around the world.

What is a Linear City?

Arturo Soria y Mata came up with the idea of the Linear City in 1882. Before him, most cities were planned with a center and then areas spreading out from it, like a circle. But Soria had a different vision.

A New Way to Build Cities

Soria's idea was to build cities in a straight line. Imagine a long, narrow strip instead of a round shape. Along this main line, he planned to put all the important things a city needs. This included roads, railways, pipes for water, and gas lines.

After setting up these main services, the rest of the city would be built along this long line. This meant houses, shops, and parks would stretch out along the main transport and utility routes.

Cities That Grow Smartly

Soria's Linear City was different from other city plans of his time. For example, Ebenezer Howard had ideas for "Garden Cities" that were more circular. Soria's linear design helped cities grow in a controlled way.

Instead of cities just spreading out everywhere, the Linear City could connect one growing city to another. This made sure that cities expanded in a smart and organized manner. It stopped them from just sprawling out without a plan.

Making Cities and Countryside Better

Arturo Soria wanted his Linear City to "ruralize the city and urbanize the countryside." This means he wanted city people to enjoy more nature, and country areas to have better city services.

His idea could be used in many ways:

  • It could form a ring around cities that already existed.
  • It could be a strip connecting two different cities.
  • It could even be a brand new town built in a straight line in an empty area.

The most famous example of his idea is the Ciudad Lineal in Madrid, Spain. It shows how his vision could become a real place.
