Life and Early Interests
Artūras Barysas was born in Panevėžys, Lithuania. As a teenager, he moved to Vilnius, the capital city. He finished his school studies there.
When he was in 8th grade, he joined a special filmmaking club. This club was at the Pioneers Palace, a youth center. After finishing school, he wanted to study film further. He tried to get into a famous film institute in Moscow. However, he was not accepted because of his very poor eyesight.
During the Soviet era, he received a pension due to his vision. He was also very active in Lithuania's underground art scene. This means he created art that was not officially approved by the government. He passed away peacefully in his sleep in 2005.
His Work in Film
Artūras Barysas made his first film, Alchemy, with his classmates. This film won an award at a festival for amateur filmmakers in Moscow. After school, he joined the Lithuanian union of amateur filmmakers. This group helped him manage film festivals. He also represented Lithuanian filmmakers at events across the Soviet Union.
Being an "official amateur" helped him avoid strict rules. It also allowed his films to be shown at many festivals. The filmmakers' union also gave him cameras and other equipment. This helped him create many unique films.
After the Soviet Union ended, video cameras became popular. Barysas then stopped making films. He started a new career in music. He joined a post-punk band called I.V.T.K.Y.G.Y.G..
Music Career
Artūras Barysas was the lead singer of the avant-garde band I.V.T.K.Y.G.Y.G.. The full name of the band means "And Everything That Is Beautiful, Is Beautiful."
Acting Roles
Barysas often played the main characters in his own films. Some of these films include He is wanted, B. and Ch., and This sweet word. In 1989, he also starred in a film by Vidmantas Gaigalas. That film was called The only child (Vienturtis).
