Arundel is a small rural village in New Zealand. It is located in the Canterbury region, on the South Island. Arundel is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) north of a town called Geraldine.
The village sits near the south bank of the Rangitata River. It is also close to Peel Forest, which is a large forest with many native trees and birds. Arundel itself is a flat and fertile area, with fields and many old trees.
Arundel has some historical importance. A bridge was built over the Rangitata River in 1872. This bridge was very important because it was the only way to connect South Canterbury with the rest of Canterbury. This lasted until the 1930s when new road bridges were built. Because of the bridge, Arundel became an important spot. The village site was officially set aside in 1874. However, Arundel has always remained a small village, with its population never going over 100 people.
A company called Arundel Lumber Company Ltd has been working in Arundel since 1951. They process Pinus radiata wood from local forests. They produce a lot of sawn timber every day.
There is a small cemetery south-west of the village. It has over 160 graves. You can reach it by walking through an avenue of flowering cherry trees. Children in Arundel attend Carew Peel Forest School, as the village is within its school zone.
