Aruni (also known as Uddalaka or Uddalaka Aruni) was a very respected wise man from ancient India. He lived around the 8th century BCE, which was many centuries before the Buddha.
Aruni is mentioned in many old Indian writings, especially in two important books called the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad and Chandogya Upanishad. His ideas are a key part of these ancient texts.
Who Was Aruni?
Aruni was a famous teacher during the Vedic period in India. Students traveled from far away to learn from him. Some of his students, like Yajnavalkya, also became very famous and respected in Hinduism. Both Aruni and Yajnavalkya are among the most often mentioned teachers in the Upanishads.
Aruni: An Early Philosopher
Many people consider Aruni to be one of the very first philosophers in recorded history. A philosophy expert named Ben-Ami Scharfstein said this.
In the Chandogya Upanishad, Aruni asked big questions about what is real and true. He noticed that everything around us changes all the time. This made him wonder if anything lasts forever and never changes.
Aruni's Big Ideas
Aruni discussed these deep questions with his son. From these talks, he shared the idea of the "Self" or "soul," which is called Ātman. He also taught about a bigger, universal Self that connects everyone and everything.
