Playing Music in Chicago
For many years, Arvella Gray lived in Chicago, Illinois. He often performed his music in public places. This is called busking. He played his guitar and sang at the famous Maxwell Street flea market. A flea market is a place where people sell many different kinds of used goods. He also played his music at train stations. He shared his blues, folk, and gospel songs with people passing by.
Recording His Songs
In the 1960s, Arvella Gray recorded some of his music. He released two songs on his own record label, which he called Gray. These songs were "Freedom Rider" and "Freedom Bus."
Later, in 1973, he released his only full music album. It was called The Singing Drifter. Many years later, in 2005, this album was re-released. This means it was made available again for new listeners. A person named Cary Baker helped produce the re-release. He also wrote notes about the music for the original record.
