Early Life and Education
Arvid Posse was born in 1820 at Rosendal manor in Malmöhus County, Sweden. His father was Governor Count Fredrik Posse. Arvid went to Lund University and studied law. He finished his law degree in 1840.
After university, he started working at a court in Skåne and Blekinge. He worked his way up, becoming an assistant judge. In 1849, Posse decided to leave public service. He moved to Charlottenlund Manor and focused on farming and local politics. He even became the president of the Malmöhus County Council for a few years.
Starting in Politics
Posse began his political journey in the Swedish Parliament in 1856. He was a member of the House of Nobility, which was one part of the old parliament. He quickly became important, leading committees that handled money and laws.
He strongly believed in free trade. This means countries should be able to trade goods with each other without many taxes or rules. He thought this would help Sweden's economy.
Posse was also involved in big discussions about how people should vote. He was worried that new voting rules might give too much power to farmers. Even so, when the new parliament, called the Riksdag, started in 1867, Posse became a leader for the farming group. This group soon formed the Lantmanna Party, and Posse became its leader. He was a very powerful person in the parliament for many years.
Becoming Prime Minister
From 1867 to 1881, Arvid Posse was a member of the Second Chamber of the Riksdag. He represented an area outside Ystad. He was in charge of important government committees. From 1876 to 1880, he was the Speaker of the Second Chamber. This meant he led the meetings and discussions.
On April 19, 1880, Arvid Posse became the Prime Minister of Sweden. He took over after the previous Prime Minister, Louis Gerhard De Geer, resigned. For a short time, he was also the Minister of Finance.
Challenges as Prime Minister
As Prime Minister, Posse had to deal with big problems. These included changing the military system and getting rid of old land taxes. The old military system, called the allotment system, was very old-fashioned. Posse wanted to create a new military with paid soldiers and conscription (where citizens are required to serve).
He also wanted to slowly remove the land taxes. He hoped his old party friends would support his plans. However, his ideas faced strong opposition. The Upper House of parliament wanted to keep the old military system. Also, his own party made changes to his plans. This led to a big defeat for Posse.
Because of this, he resigned as Prime Minister on June 13, 1883. After that, he became the President of the Administrative Court of Appeal, where he worked until 1889.
Later Life and Legacy
Even after being Prime Minister, Posse continued to be a member of the First Chamber of parliament from 1882 to 1890. He spoke out against new taxes on grain, which were part of a debate between free trade and protectionism. He also supported moderate changes to voting rights.
Arvid Posse was known for speaking clearly and calmly in parliament. He was elected to several important groups, like the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry. He passed away in Stockholm on April 24, 1901.
Relative
Arvid Posse's niece, Sigrid Lindström, had an amazing experience. In 1912, she survived the sinking of the RMS Titanic! She was a first-class passenger on the famous ship.
