What are Ascaris Worms?
Ascaris worms are a kind of nematode. Nematodes are a huge group of worms. They are very successful, meaning they live in many places. For example, about 90% of all life on the seafloor are nematodes!
There are different types of Ascaris worms. One type, called A. suum, usually lives in pigs. Another type, called A. lumbricoides, affects humans. This human worm is the largest roundworm that lives in people's intestines.
Ascaris in Humans
A. lumbricoides is the most common worm infection in humans. This infection is called ascariasis. It is often found in warm, tropical places where hygiene might not be very good.
When a person has ascariasis, it can cause health problems. It can make it hard for the body to get enough nutrients from food. This can affect how a child grows and learns. It can also cause tummy aches or other digestive issues.
