Ash is a small, unincorporated community in Houston County, Texas, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but no official local government. In 2000, only 19 people lived there.
History
Ash was founded in 1870. It was named after James B. Ash, an important person in the area. In 1890, a post office opened in Ash. This helped the community grow. By 1896, Ash had a gristmill-gin (a place to grind grain and process cotton) and a general store. The post office closed in 1909. But in the mid-1930s, the village still had a chapel, two stores, and several homes. About 10 people were thought to live there in 1936. After World War II, the stores closed down. By the early 1970s, only a church and a few scattered homes remained. In the early 1990s, Ash was a spread-out rural village. There were no official population counts then. However, in 2000, only 19 people were living in Ash.
Geography
Ash is located about 16 miles (26 km) southwest of Crockett. It is found at the very end of FM 1280.
