History of Ashern

Ashern started to grow when the Canadian National Railway arrived in 1911. A train station was built in 1920. The town was named after A. S. Hern, who was a timekeeper for the company that built the railway.

The first school district in Ashern was set up in 1911. Later, a new school building was built in 1953. Today, Ashern has the Ashern Central School for older students and the Ashern Early Years School for younger kids.

A church was built in 1919, which later became the Ashern United Church. The community used to be part of the Rural Municipality of Siglunes. In 2015, it joined with another area to form the Municipality of West Interlake.

  • Ashern Museum: This museum is open in the summer. It has six old buildings that have been fixed up. These include the old train station, a church, a log house, the old post office, and a school.
  • Community Events: Ashern has several halls for events and groups. Hunters love to visit in the fall because the area is popular for hunting.
