Ashfield is a friendly residential suburb located in Perth, Western Australia. It's part of the Town of Bassendean and sits right along the beautiful Swan River. A train line, called the Midland line, runs through the suburb. You can catch a train at the Ashfield railway station.

Ashfield is home to Ashfield Reserve, a big park area. This park also has Ashfield Arena, a place for sports and events. The suburb also features Ashfield Flats, which are the largest natural river flats left in the whole Perth area.

Living in Ashfield

Ashfield has an interesting history when it comes to its homes. It started with just a few houses for railway workers near the train tracks.

How Ashfield Grew

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Ashfield saw a building boom. About 400 new houses were built. Many of these homes were put up by a government group called the State Housing Commission. They even sold half of these new properties to individuals.

Later, in the late 1990s, the suburb got a big makeover. The State Housing Commission, now known as the Department of Housing, led this project. It happened at the same time as a big project to connect Perth homes to a main sewage system. Before this, many homes used septic tanks.

During this makeover, some older houses were taken down. For every three houses removed, five to seven new ones were built. Most of these new homes were sold to people buying their first home or those with lower incomes.

The Swan River Connection

The Swan River is a special part of Ashfield. The deepest spot in the river, upstream from Melville Water, is found right here. An interesting fact is that a shark was once caught in this area in the late 1970s. This was the farthest upstream a shark had ever been found in the Swan River!

Schools in Ashfield

Ashfield has one primary school within its borders, called Ashfield Primary School. For older students, the closest high school is Cyril Jackson Senior Campus.
