Ashikaga Yoshikatsu (born March 19, 1434 – died August 16, 1443) was an important leader in old Japan. He was the seventh shōgun of the Ashikaga shogunate. A shōgun was like a military ruler or general who governed Japan for the emperor. Yoshikatsu ruled for a very short time, from 1442 to 1443. This was during a period in Japanese history called the Muromachi period.
Yoshikatsu was the son of the sixth shōgun, Ashikaga Yoshinori. His mother was Hino Shigeko. When he was a child, his name was Chiyachamaru. A lady named Hino Tomiko was planned to marry Yoshikatsu later. She later married his brother, Yoshimasa.
In 1441, Yoshikatsu's father, Shōgun Yoshinori, passed away. Yoshinori was 48 years old. After this, it was decided that his 8-year-old son, Yoshikatsu, would become the new shōgun. Yoshikatsu officially became shōgun the next year.
Sadly, Yoshikatsu died on August 16, 1443. He was only 9 years old. He loved riding horses. He was badly hurt in a fall from a horse, which led to his death. He had been shōgun for only two years. His younger brother, Yoshinari, who was 8 years old, then became the next shōgun. Later, Yoshinari changed his name to Yoshimasa. He is now better known by that name.
Time Period of Yoshikatsu's Rule
The years when Yoshikatsu was shōgun are known by a special Japanese time name. This is called an nengō or era name.
