The Story of Ashland Town Center

How the Mall Started

Ashland Town Center was first built in 1988. It was a team effort between Glimcher Realty Trust, Edward J. Debartolo Corporation, and Crown American. The mall officially opened its doors in 1989.

When it first opened, its main stores were Walmart, JCPenney, and Hess's. Later, Goody's joined as a fourth main store. For most of the 1990s, the mall stayed pretty much the same. In 1993, Hess's stores were sold to Proffitt's. Then, in 2006, Belk bought those stores from Proffitt's.

Changes in the 2000s

In 2005, the Walmart store at the mall closed. Walmart moved to a new, bigger store outside the mall. The old Walmart building was taken down in 2008. A new, larger JCPenney store was built in its place. This new JCPenney opened in August 2008. It was twice as big as the old one and became the largest department store in Kentucky.

The old JCPenney store was then empty. Half of that space became a Belk Men and Home Store in 2009. This new Belk store took the place of an older Belk Men's Store. The old Belk Men's Store then became a Hibbett Sports in late 2009.

Mall Updates and New Stores

Ashland Town Center also got some other updates in 2008 and 2009. The food court was made smaller to create space for more shops. A new family restroom was added, and the men's and women's restrooms were updated. Some other stores were moved around to make more room in the JCPenney area. A Cheddar's Casual Café restaurant was also built in the parking lot near JCPenney.

In 2010, TJ Maxx opened in the mall, replacing Goody's as a main store. Other new stores that opened around this time included Rax, Panera Bread, and The Children's Place.
