From School to the Stage
Ashley Nicole Black was born in Los Angeles, California. She grew up in a nearby town called Walnut, California.
She was a dedicated student. First, she went to the University of California, Santa Cruz, and earned a degree in theatre arts in 2007. After that, she attended Northwestern University for her master's degree in performance studies. She was even working on a PhD, but she decided to leave school to follow her dream of a career in comedy.
A Career in Comedy and Television
Black started her comedy journey at a famous comedy school called the Second City. There, she took her first class in improv, a type of comedy where performers make up scenes on the spot.
Working on Full Frontal
In 2016, Black became a writer and correspondent for the TV show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. A correspondent is a type of reporter who often appears in funny segments. She worked on the show for three years and was nominated for six Emmy Awards. In 2017, she and the writing team won an Emmy for a special episode.
Writing for Hit Shows
After leaving Full Frontal in 2019, Black continued to work on many successful shows. She is a writer and cast member on the HBO comedy series A Black Lady Sketch Show.
