A. H. M. Ashoka Premlal Wadigamangawa, also known as Asoka Wadigamangawa (born on 7 January 1952 – died on 5 July 2020), was a well-known politician from Sri Lanka. He served as a member of the country's Parliament. Throughout his political life, he was part of several major political parties, including the United National Party, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, and the United People's Freedom Alliance.
Ashoka Wadigamangawa's Political Journey
Ashoka Wadigamangawa first became a Member of Parliament in 1989. He represented the Puttalam District and was part of the United National Party at that time. He served in Parliament until 1994.
Later, he decided to leave the United National Party. He then joined another political group called the United People's Freedom Alliance. The President at the time, Mahinda Rajapaksa, appointed him to the North Western Provincial Council. This council helps manage the affairs of the North Western Province in Sri Lanka.
In 2015, during the presidential election, Ashoka Wadigamangawa changed his support again. He decided to back the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. In January 2018, the then-President, Maithripala Sirisena, made him a party organiser for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in the Puttalam District.
He also ran as an independent candidate in the 2019 presidential election. This means he ran without being officially linked to a major political party. He received about 2,924 votes in that election. In February 2020, he joined a new political party called Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
His Passing
Sadly, Ashoka Wadigamangawa passed away on 5 July 2020. He was 68 years old. His death was caused by a road accident. The accident happened at Maragasgolla, near Padeniya, on the main road between Kurunegala and Puttalam.
He was traveling in his car when it collided with a lorry at the Padeniya junction. He was taken to a hospital in Wariyapola but died from his serious injuries. At the time of his death, he was planning to run for the Samagi Jana Balawegaya party in the 2020 parliamentary election for the Puttalam District.
