Askomill House: A Historic Home

A Story from the 16th Century

Askomill House has an interesting history, especially from the late 1500s. In 1598, a powerful clan leader named Angus MacDonald, 8th of Dunnyveg was at his home in Kintyre.

A Family Dispute

At that time, the King of Scotland, James V of Scotland, wanted all clan leaders to follow his rules. The King's council sent Angus's own son, James MacDonald, to make sure his father would obey. James arrived with about 100 to 200 armed men and surrounded Askomill House.

Angus MacDonald refused to come out of his house. To make him leave, his son James set fire to the house. Angus was then captured and held prisoner at Smerby Castle. This event shows how difficult times were for clan leaders and the King in Scotland during the 16th century.
