Asli Hassan Abade is a brave and important figure from Somalia. She was a pilot in the Somali Air Force (SAF). Asli was the very first African woman to fly a plane by herself. She was also the only female pilot in the Somali Air Force.
Asli was a pilot from 1976 until 1992. This was when a difficult civil war began in Somalia. After her time in the military, she became a civil activist. In October 2009, she was living in Texas, USA.

Flying for Somalia
Asli Hassan Abade made history on September 9, 1976. This was the day she flew a plane solo for the first time. She was a respected pilot in the Somali Air Force for many years.
Working for Peace
In the mid-2000s, Asli started a special peace campaign. She wanted to help end the long civil conflict in her home country, Somalia. She encouraged leaders to work together and find solutions.
Asli attended important political meetings. She always wore clothes in the colors of the Somali flag. People at these meetings respected her efforts very much.
Her work helped create the Transitional Federal Government. This was a big step towards peace in Somalia. Because of her dedication, she earned the nickname Calansida. This means "The Flag-bearer" in Somali.
