AMPROFON, which stands for the Mexican Association of Producers of Phonograms and Videograms, is a special group in Mexico. It's made up of many record companies, both big international ones and smaller Mexican ones. This organization helps protect the interests of music and video producers.
AMPROFON started on April 3, 1963. It's a trade association for companies that make music recordings. These companies represent over 70% of the music market in Mexico. AMPROFON is also connected to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which is a big global music group.

History of AMPROFON
This organization began on April 3, 1963, in Mexico. It was first called Phonographic Discs Producers (AMPRODISC). The main goal was to create a group that would protect the rights and interests of companies making music recordings.
The first companies that joined AMPRODISC were:
- Compañía Importadora de Discos, S.A.
- CBS de Mexico, S.A.
- Discos Mexicanos, S.A.
- Fábrica de Discos Peerless, S.A.
- GAMMA, S.A.
- Panamericana de Discos, S.A.
- RCA Victor Mexicana, S.A.
Later, the organization changed its name a couple of times. On July 26, 1971, it became the Mexican Phonogram Producers Association. Then, on May 3, 1990, because music videos became popular, the name changed again to its current one: Mexican Association of Producers of Phonograms and Videograms (AMPROFON).
Music Awards and Certificates
AMPROFON gives out special awards for music releases in Mexico. These awards are called certificates. They show how popular a song or album is. The type of award depends on how many copies of the music have been shipped to stores.
How Music Awards Work
The awards are given based on the number of units shipped, not always the exact number sold to fans. Here are the main award levels:
- Gold: For a certain number of units.
- Platinum: For even more units, usually double the Gold amount.
- Diamond: For a very large number of units, showing huge popularity.
The number of units needed for each award has changed over the years. For example, since November 2020, an album needs to ship 70,000 units for Gold, 140,000 for Platinum, and 700,000 for Diamond.
Format | Thresholds | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
Gold | Platinum | Diamond | Notes | |
Album | 70,000 | 140,000 | 700,000 | Since November 2020 |
30,000 | 60,000 | 300,000 | From July 2009, until October 2020 | |
Digital/Single Track | 70,000 | 140,000 | 700,000 | Since November 2020, includes streaming and digital sales |
30,000 | 60,000 | 300,000 | Until October 2020, includes streaming and digital sales | |
Music DVD | 10,000 | 20,000 | 100,000 | This award was stopped on February 19, 2014 |
How Awards Are Added Up
AMPROFON has a unique way of giving out awards. In many countries, once an album gets Platinum, it just gets "2x Platinum," "3x Platinum," and so on. But in Mexico, AMPROFON can add more Gold or Platinum awards to a recording that already has Platinum status. For example, an album might get Gold, then Platinum, then Platinum+Gold, then 2x Platinum, and so on. This happens each time a new sales level is reached.
Music Charts
AMPROFON also creates weekly music charts. These charts show which albums are the most popular in Mexico. They are updated every Wednesday evening.
There are four main album charts:
- Top 100 Mexico albums chart: This chart lists the 100 best-selling albums in the country. It includes all types of music and EPs (Extended Plays).
- Spanish Albums Chart: This chart shows the Top 20 Pop, Rock, and Dance albums that are in Spanish. It doesn't matter where the artist is from, as long as the album is in Spanish.
- Popular Music Albums Chart: This chart focuses on the Top 20 regional Mexican music albums. This includes styles like ranchera and grupero.
- International Albums Chart: Even though it's sometimes called "Inglés" (English), this Top 20 chart includes "international" releases. This means artists with albums in languages other than Spanish (not just English) can appear here. Albums in Spanish are not included on this chart.
AMPROFON used to certify physical sales of single songs until June 30, 2009. As of 2017, they publish a weekly chart for streaming singles, showing the most streamed songs.
