Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Association of Welsh Translators and Interpreters, known in Welsh as Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru, is a professional group for people who translate and interpret between the Welsh and English languages. Most of its around 340 members are translators, who work with written words. A smaller number are interpreters, who work with spoken words. This association is also part of a bigger worldwide group called the International Federation of Translators (FIT).

How the Association Began

The Association of Welsh Translators and Interpreters was created in 1976. Its main goal was to give translators and interpreters a place to talk about their work. They wanted to make sure that people translating between Welsh and English always met high professional standards. The association also gives advice to the Welsh Language Commissioner about translation topics. The Commissioner helps protect and promote the Welsh language.
