Aster Mamo's Career Journey
Before becoming an ambassador, Aster Mamo had many important jobs in the Ethiopian government.
Early Roles in Government
From 2005 to 2014, she was Ethiopia's Minister for Youth and Sports. This meant she helped with programs for young people and sports activities across the country.
From 2014 to 2015, she was the chief government whip. This role involved helping the government's plans move forward in the parliament. She was also a member of the main committee for a political group called the Oromo Peoples' Democratic Organization (OPDO) until 2016.
Becoming Deputy Prime Minister
On April 8, 2014, Aster Mamo was given two big jobs. She became the 2nd Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia. This is a very high position, helping the Prime Minister lead the country. She also became the Minister for the Civil Service. This role meant she was in charge of how government workers do their jobs. She took over these roles from Muktar Kedir.
In October 2016, her roles as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Civil Service ended. She also left her position on the main committee of the OPDO.
Current Role as Ambassador
Since January 17, 2018, Aster Mamo has been serving as Ethiopia's ambassador to Canada. As an ambassador, she represents Ethiopia in Canada. She works to build good relationships between the two countries.
