Mulatu Teshome Wirtu (Oromo: Mulaatuu Tashoome Wirtuu; Amharic: ሙላቱ ተሾመ ውርቱ) was born in 1957. He is an important Ethiopian politician. He served as the President of Ethiopia from 2013 to 2018.

Mulatu Teshome: A Leader of Ethiopia
Early Life and Education
Mulatu Teshome was born in a town called Arjo in the Welega Province of Ethiopia. He received a lot of his education in China. At Peking University, he earned a bachelor's degree in the philosophy of political economy. He also received a doctorate in international politics from the same university.

Later, in 1990, he earned a Master of Arts degree. This was in Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in the United States. After his studies, he taught at several universities and institutions in other countries.
Political Career
Mulatu Teshome has held many important roles in the Ethiopian government. In the mid-1990s, he worked as a Deputy Minister. This role involved helping with economic development and cooperation for the country.
In 2001, he became the Minister of Agriculture. This meant he was in charge of farming and rural development for Ethiopia. From 2002 to 2005, he was the Speaker of the House of Federation. This is a very important part of Ethiopia's government, similar to a parliament.
Mulatu Teshome also represented Ethiopia in other countries. He served as Ethiopia's Ambassador to several nations. These included China, Japan, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. An ambassador is a diplomat who represents their country in another country.

Becoming President
While he was serving as the Ambassador to Turkey, Mulatu Teshome was chosen to be the President of Ethiopia. This happened on October 7, 2013. The members of the Ethiopian parliament voted for him, and their decision was unanimous. This means everyone agreed.
One member of parliament from the opposition party, Girma Seifu, even welcomed his election. Like the presidents before him, Girma Wolde-Giorgis and Negasso Gidada, Mulatu Teshome is from the Oromo people. The Oromo are a large ethnic group in Ethiopia.
Mulatu Teshome served as president until October 25, 2018. He has one son.
