The Story of Asterix Versus Caesar

A Special Celebration in Rome

To celebrate Julius Caesar's many victories, gifts arrive in Rome from all over the Roman Empire. Caesar wants a huge show to make the celebrations even better. He tells Caius Fatuous, who runs a famous gladiator school, to put on a grand show. If Caius fails, he will become the main attraction himself!

Love and Trouble in Gaul

Back in the small Gaulish village, Asterix notices his friend Obelix acting strangely. The wise Druid Getafix explains that Obelix is in love. He has fallen for Panacea, who is Chief Vitalstatistix's niece. Panacea has just returned to the village.

Obelix tries to win her over, but he gets very sad. Panacea is reunited with Tragicomix, a handsome young man who plans to marry her. The two lovers decide to go for a walk in the nearby woods. But a group of Roman soldiers ambushes them. A new Roman recruit hopes to impress his Centurion at a nearby army camp.

The Search Begins

When Asterix and Obelix find out what happened, they tell the village. The villagers quickly attack the Roman camp. After the fight, they question the Centurion. He admits that he angrily told the recruit to take the prisoners away. He knew this would cause big problems.

Asterix and Obelix, along with their loyal dog Dogmatix, head to the nearest Roman army headquarters. They need to find out where the recruit went. They learn he was sent to a faraway outpost in the Sahara desert with his prisoners. To follow them, Asterix and Obelix join the Roman army!

Across the Desert to Rome

When they reach the desert, the pair discover something new. Panacea and Tragicomix escaped from the Romans and ran into the desert. Asterix and Obelix follow their path. Soon, they meet some people who trade in humans. These traders tell them that they sold Panacea and Tragicomix as slaves. They were sent to Rome.

Asterix and Obelix find a way to get to Rome. In the Roman capital, they learn that Caius bought Panacea and Tragicomix. The two friends try to meet Caius at a bathhouse. Caius sees them easily defeat his bodyguards. Impressed, he orders his men to capture them for his show.

The Colosseum Showdown

Asterix has a small argument with Obelix and misplaces his magic potion. Then, Caius's men kidnap Asterix. When Obelix realizes Asterix is gone, he goes to find him. He rescues Asterix from a flooded cell. But Dogmatix goes missing! He ran into the city's sewers to find the magic potion.

Without Dogmatix or the potion, Asterix and Obelix continue their search. They quickly learn that Caesar has ordered Caius to make Panacea and Tragicomix the grand finale of the emperor's show at the Colosseum.

To get inside, the two Gauls go to Caius's school. They get spots as gladiators for the next day. The Gauls quickly mess up the show! They win a chariot race and easily beat many gladiators. As lions are released to attack them, along with Tragicomix and Panacea, Dogmatix arrives with the magic potion!

The group uses the potion to defeat the lions. Obelix, distracted by Panacea, accidentally smashes a third of the Colosseum! Caesar is very impressed with the show. He grants the Gauls their freedom. They return home to their village's famous victory feast. As everyone celebrates, Asterix sits alone in a tree. He has fallen a little bit for Panacea after their adventure.
