Early Life and Dreams
Astrid Allwyn was born on November 27, 1905, in Manchester, Connecticut. Her family, which included four sisters and a brother, moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, when she was three.
When Astrid was 13, she showed great talent in singing. She was offered a scholarship to the Boston Conservatory of Music. However, she chose not to go because it meant moving away from her family. After high school, she moved to New York City. She hoped to become a concert singer. Instead, she took business classes and worked as a typist on Wall Street.
Becoming an Actress
Astrid Allwyn later studied dancing and acting in New York. She joined a "stock company," which was a group of actors who performed different plays. In 1929, she made her first appearance on Broadway, which is the highest level of theater in New York. She acted in a play called Street Scene.
Her strong performance in another play, Once in a Lifetime, helped her get movie roles. She signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, a major film studio. This began her career in movies. In many films, she played characters who were not the main hero's true love. For example, she was the fiancée of Charles Boyer's character in the 1939 film Love Affair. She also played the daughter of James Stewart's mentor in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
Family Life
Astrid Allwyn was married twice. Her first husband was actor Robert Kent. They even appeared together in the 1936 Shirley Temple movie Dimples. They got married in 1937 but divorced in 1941.
Later in 1941, she married Charles O. Fee. They stayed married until her death. Astrid and Charles had two daughters, Melinda and Vicki. Both of their daughters also became actresses, following in their mother's footsteps.
Later Years and Passing
