What's Inside the Book?

The Atheneo de Grandesa was printed a long time ago, when books had to be approved by a group called the Inquisition. This was a religious court that checked books to make sure they didn't contain anything they thought was wrong. Because of this, the book includes a special approval note called an imprimatur.

The book is also dedicated to Saint Olaguer, who used to be a bishop in Barcelona. This means Romaguera wrote the book to honor him.

The Important Introduction

The most well-known part of the Atheneo is its introduction, called the prologue. In this part, Josep Romaguera bravely defended the Catalan language. At that time, the Castilian language was much more common for writing literature in Spain. Romaguera's strong support for Catalan was very important. People in Catalonia remembered and talked about his ideas throughout the 1700s. His work helped prepare the way for a bigger movement in the 1800s called the Renaixença, which brought back a lot of interest in Catalan culture and language.

The Main Chapters

Most of the Atheneo is written like a serious discussion or essay. It's divided into 14 chapters, which Romaguera called "eminèncias." Each chapter has several pages of writing, followed by an emblem. An emblem is a picture that represents an idea. After each emblem, there's a short poem that explains its meaning.

The chapters mostly talk about how people can improve themselves and try to become better individuals. The writing style is very detailed and uses many references to other works. Romaguera's poems are also quite famous and are often included in Catalan textbooks. He is one of the few poets from the Baroque period whose work is still widely read today.
