Early Life and Education
Atilla Karaosmanoğlu was born in Manisa, Turkey. He studied at the Faculty of Political Sciences at Ankara University. He finished his studies there in 1954. After that, he earned a special degree called a doctorate. He got this degree in economics from Istanbul University. Later, he taught classes at famous universities. These included NYU and Harvard University in the United States.
Working for His Country
After his studies, Atilla Karaosmanoğlu returned to Turkey. He became a manager at the State Planning Organization of Turkey. This group helps plan how the country's economy will grow. He also worked as a senior advisor for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The OECD is a group of countries that work together to improve their economies.
Working with the World Bank
In 1966, Karaosmanoğlu started working for the World Bank. The World Bank is a big international organization. It helps countries around the world with money and advice. In 1971, the Prime Minister of Turkey, Nihat Erim, asked him to join the government.
Becoming Deputy Prime Minister
On March 26, 1971, Atilla Karaosmanoğlu became the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey. He was in charge of the economy. He was part of a special government called a "technocratic government." This means it was made up of experts, not just politicians. However, he resigned from his job on December 3, 1971. He felt he could not make the changes he had promised. He had disagreements with other ministers, especially with the Ministry of Finance.
Return to the World Bank
After leaving the government, Karaosmanoğlu went back to the World Bank. He worked there for another 22 years. He became a very important person at the bank. He rose to the position of Vice President. He retired from the World Bank on November 30, 1994.
His Final Years
Atilla Karaosmanoğlu passed away on November 11, 2013. He died because of a breathing problem. He was buried in the Çengelköy cemetery in Istanbul. A special fund was created in his name. It is called the Turkish Philanthropy Funds. This fund gives scholarships to students. It works through the Association for the Support of Contemporary Living (Çağdaş Yaşamı Destekleme Derneği).
