The Atkinson Candy Company is a candy company located in Lufkin, Texas. It is most famous for making the Chick-O-Stick candy.
The Story of Atkinson Candy
The Atkinson Candy Company is a family-owned business. It was started in 1932 by B.E. Atkinson, Sr., and his wife, Mabel C. Atkinson. Mr. Atkinson used to travel to Houston to buy candy and tobacco. He would then sell these items to small local shops on his way back home.
Today, the company works out of a large building that is about 100,000 square feet. Eric Atkinson, who is a grandchild of the founders, now leads the company.
Judson-Atkinson Candies: A Sweet Partnership
In 1983, Atkinson Candy Company bought another local candy business. This company was called the Judson Candy Company. It later became known as Judson-Atkinson Candies. Judson-Atkinson was founded way back in 1899 and was based in San Antonio, Texas.
Sadly, in 2011, Judson-Atkinson had to close down. This happened because the cost of sugar and other ingredients became too high. Judson-Atkinson used a lot of sugar, about four million pounds each year, to make their candies.
Popular Candies from Atkinson
Atkinson Candy Company is known for its delicious peanut butter and peppermint candies. Their current candy lineup includes the famous Chick-O-Stick. They also make Coconut Long Boys, peanut brittle, mint twists, and Peanut Butter Bars. During holidays, they create special holiday candies too.
Atkinson also has a special line of hard candies called Gemstone Candies. In 2013, Atkinson bought the rights to make other popular candies. These included Black Cow, Slo Poke, and Sophie Mae. Later, in 2019, they made a deal with Spangler Candy Company. This allowed them to start making Mary Janes, which used to be a Necco candy.
