The Atlanta Police Department, or APD, is the main police force for the city of Atlanta. Their job is to enforce laws, prevent crime, and respond to emergencies. They help people in many ways, like directing traffic, investigating crimes, and keeping public order.
How the APD Started
The APD was officially formed in 1873. When it first began, there were only 26 officers. These officers were responsible for keeping peace in the growing city of Atlanta. The city council chose Thomas Jones to be the very first Atlanta Chief of Police. He led the department in its early years.
Who Leads the APD Now?
Today, the APD is a much larger force with over 1,700 officers. These officers work hard every day to protect the community. The department is currently led by an interim police chief. An interim chief is someone who takes charge temporarily until a new permanent leader is chosen.
