Atropatene was an ancient kingdom that existed a very long time ago. It was located in a part of the world that is now northern Iran. This kingdom started around the 4th century BCE (that's Before the Common Era).
Atropatene became a kingdom after the huge empire of Alexander the Great broke apart. It was named after a man called Atropates, who was a Persian leader. He became the ruler of this area.
Its capital city was called Ganzak. For a long time, Atropatene was an independent kingdom. However, over time, it became a vassal kingdom. This means it was still ruled by its own kings, but it had to obey a more powerful empire. In this case, it became a vassal of the Parthian Empire.
Eventually, in the year 226 AD (Anno Domini, or in the Common Era), another powerful empire called the Sasanian Empire took control of Atropatene. By then, it was probably more like a province of the Parthian Empire than a fully independent kingdom.
Today, many people see Atropatene as an important part of the history of the modern country of Azerbaijan.
