Atul Chandra Hazarika (1903–1986) was a very important writer from Assam, India. He was known for many things: he wrote poems, plays, and stories for children. He also translated books from other languages. People even called him "Sahitycharjya," which means a great literary master, given by the Asam Sahitya Sabha, the main literary group in Assam.

Life and Literary Journey
Atul Hazarika was born on September 9, 1903, in Assam, India. He studied at Calcutta University and earned his M.A. degree. After finishing his studies, he started working as a teacher of Assamese literature.
He later became a professor and the head of the Assamese department at Cotton College, Guwahati. He retired from this position.
A Prolific Writer
Atul Hazarika wrote over one hundred books in the Assamese language. In the 1930s, he wrote many plays. These plays helped bring new life to the Assamese theater scene. Around the same time, he became famous as a young poet. People started calling him "Dipalir Kobi," which means "the poet of Dipali."
He also wrote many storybooks especially for children. Some of his adaptations of famous Western stories became very popular. These included "Grimor Xadhu" (Grimm's Fairy Tales) and "Andersonor Xadhu" (Andersen's Fairy Tales).
Supporting Other Writers
Atul Hazarika was also a great editor. He collected and published works by famous writers like Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa. He also helped lesser-known talented writers. He gathered their works, especially those who passed away young, and published them in a collection called "Moroha Phoolor Koroni."
Promoting Culture
Atul Hazarika was one of the people who helped change how Bihu was celebrated. Bihu is the national festival of Assam. He was part of the group that first organized Bihu as a stage show in Guwahati. This happened about sixty years ago and made Bihu even more popular.
Leading Literary Efforts
He was also a dedicated literary worker. As the general secretary, he helped bring new energy to the Asam Sahitya Sabha in the 1950s. This is the top literary organization for the Assamese language. In 1959, he became the President of this important group.
Awards and Recognition
Atul Hazarika received several important awards for his contributions to literature.
Sahitya Akademi Award
In 1969, he was given the Sahitya Akademi Award. This award was for his major work called Monchalekha. This book explored five hundred years of Assamese drama and theater history.
Padma Shri
The Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri award in 1971. This is one of India's highest civilian awards.
Lasting Legacy
To remember his contributions, Gauhati University named one of its hostels after him: Sahitcharya Atul Chandra Hazarika Hostel. The Government of Assam also gives out the Atul Chandra Hazarika award every three years. This award recognizes important cultural figures from Assam who have made big contributions to drama and mobile theaters.
