Aubrey D. Sherrod (born November 6, 1962) is an American former professional basketball player. He was a left-handed shooting guard. Aubrey was seen as one of the best young players in his age group.
He was even named Co-MVP of the 1981 McDonald's All-American Game. He shared this award with Adrian Branch. Aubrey chose to play college basketball in his hometown at Wichita State. After four years, the Chicago Bulls picked him in the 1985 NBA draft. He played professionally for a short time in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and in Australia. In 1994, he was added to the Wichita State Hall of Fame.

High School Basketball Star
Aubrey Sherrod was born in Wichita, Kansas. He was the youngest of five brothers. His father passed away when Aubrey was only two years old. Aubrey grew very tall very quickly. In second grade, he was already much taller than other kids his age. Because of his height, his older brother Avery invited him to play on his team of sixth-graders.
Aubrey went to Wichita Heights High School. He joined the school's main basketball team in his second year. His coach, Charles "Goose" Doughty, Jr., was like a father figure to him. In his third year, Aubrey scored about 24 points per game. He was known for being a good defender and a smooth shooter.
Top Player in High School
In his final year at Wichita Heights, Aubrey averaged 27.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He was considered one of the top two guards in the country. The other top guard was Michael Jordan. Aubrey was also one of the best players overall. During his high school career, he was chosen for the all-conference first team three times. He scored 1,735 points, which was the second-highest in Wichita history.
His senior year earned him a spot on the Parade All-America Second Team. He was also named a McDonald's All-American. The 1981 McDonald's game was played in his hometown of Wichita. Aubrey scored 19 points in that game. He shared the MVP award with Adrian Branch. He also played in another all-star game called the Capital Classic. There, he scored 20 points and was named the game's MVP.
College Basketball Journey
Many colleges wanted Aubrey Sherrod to play for them. He chose between Kansas State and Wichita State. In June 1981, he signed with Wichita State. Another local high school star, Greg Dreiling, also joined the team. Aubrey chose to wear jersey number 22. Coach Gene Smithson picked him to be a starter.
Freshman Year Success
In his first year, Aubrey averaged 11.0 points per game. He also had 1.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.3 steals. He shot the ball very well, making 50.7% of his shots. He also set a record for free throw percentage for a freshman at Wichita State, making 77.2% of his free throws. This record has since been broken. He started 28 out of 29 games that season. He played about 26.5 minutes per game. The Wichita State team finished the season with a great record of 23 wins and 6 losses.
Sophomore and Junior Years
In his second year, Aubrey played even more. His scoring went up to 14.4 points per game. He also had 2.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.2 steals. At the end of the season, he was named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference Second Team. Wichita State had a fantastic regular season with 25 wins and 3 losses. They were first in their conference.
Aubrey's third year saw his scoring improve again. He averaged 15.3 points per game in 30 games. He also had 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He set a personal best for steals per game (1.4). On February 6, 1984, he scored a career-high 30 points against West Texas State. For the second year in a row, he was chosen for the All-MVC Second Team.
Senior Season Highlights
In his final college season, Aubrey was the second-highest scorer on his team. He averaged 18.5 points per game. He also had 3.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.1 steals. He shot 51.1% from the field and 85.6% from the free throw line. On March 2, 1985, he scored a career-high 31 points against Tulsa. He also had 11 assists in a game against Indiana State. This was a personal best and one of the top assist performances in Wichita State history.
For the third year in a row, Aubrey was selected for the All-MVC Second Team. Wichita State won the MVC Tournament that year. They then played in the 1985 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. They were eliminated in the first round by Georgia.
Aubrey finished his college career with 1,765 points, which placed him 6th all-time at Wichita State. He was also 5th in assists with 384. He was once the all-time leader in steals with 148, but other players have since passed him.
Professional Basketball Career
After college, Aubrey Sherrod was eligible for the NBA draft. The Chicago Bulls picked him in the second round of the 1985 draft. He was the 34th player chosen overall. He joined the Bulls for their preseason games. However, he was released from the team in October 1985. This happened just before the 1985–86 NBA season began. The Bulls already had a young star shooting guard in Michael Jordan.
Playing in the CBA and Australia
After being released by the Bulls, Aubrey signed with the Kansas City Sizzlers. This team was part of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He had an ankle injury, so he could not join the team until December 1985. In the 1985–86 CBA season, he played 37 games. He averaged 12.5 points, 1.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 0.9 steals per game. He also shot 36% from the 3-point line. He played 4 playoff games, averaging 14.3 points.
In September 1986, he signed with the Seattle SuperSonics. But he did not make their final team for the 1986–87 NBA season. He then joined the Wyoming Wildcatters in the CBA. In 25 games with them, he averaged 7.8 points, 1.0 rebound, and 2.3 assists. He shot 44% from the field.
In 1989, Aubrey played one season in Australia. He played for the Geelong Supercats in the National Basketball League. There, he averaged 22.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. He shot 46.6% from the field and 38.3% from three-point range.
