Who Was Auger de Balben?
Auger de Balben was likely born in a region of France called Dauphiné. Specifically, he might have come from a place called Risoul. Even though he was a significant figure, there are no family records (armorials) from Dauphiné that mention him.
His Early Life and Role
Auger de Balben was a close friend and fellow soldier of Raymond du Puy. Raymond du Puy was the Grand Master before him. Auger traveled with Raymond on important trips. For example, they went to Saint-Gilles in 1157 and to Forez in 1158. These trips were likely for the business of the Knights Hospitaller.
A Leader for the Hospitallers
Around 1160, Auger de Balben took part in an important meeting. This meeting was called the Synod of Nazareth. At this meeting, he showed his support for Pope Alexander III. This was a time when there were two popes, and Auger chose to support Alexander III against the other pope, Victor IV.
The exact date Auger became Grand Master is not fully clear. The first official paper we have from him is from November 29, 1160. The last known paper from the previous Grand Master is from November 25, 1158. Auger's time as Grand Master was quite short. The last time he is mentioned in records is March 11, 1162. After him, Gilbert of Assailly became the Grand Master.
The Mystery of Arnaud de Comps
You might find some old lists that say Arnaud de Comps was the next Grand Master after Auger. These lists might even call him the fourth Grand Master. However, today, most historians believe that Arnaud de Comps never actually held this position. His name probably appeared by mistake in old lists of leaders. But because of these old lists, his name is sometimes still included in the order of Grand Masters.
