A Look at Augsburg

German Roots in Arkansas

In 1883, something special happened in Pope County, Arkansas. The very first families who spoke German and followed the Lutheran faith started to arrive. They settled about 15 miles northwest of a larger town called Russellville. These families were looking for a new home and a place to build their community.

Augsburg was given its name to honor a famous city in Germany, also called Augsburg. This shows how proud the settlers were of their heritage and where they came from.

The Story of Zion Lutheran Church

In 1884, the German-speaking settlers built their very first church in Augsburg. They named it Zion Lutheran Church. This church was a very important place for the community to gather and worship.

Sadly, the first church building burned down in 1907. But the community didn't give up! They quickly built a new church to replace it. Many years later, in 1978, this second church building also burned down. Once again, the people of Augsburg worked together to build a new church, which was completed in 1979–80.

The first pastor of Zion Lutheran Church was Rev. F. W. Herzberger. Today, the current pastor is Rev. Joshua Ralston. The church continues to be a central part of the Augsburg community's history and life.
