August Wilhelm Ambros (born November 17, 1816 – died June 28, 1876) was an Austrian composer. He was also a famous music historian. He had Czech family roots.
Early Life and Education
August Wilhelm Ambros was born in Mýto, a town in Bohemia. His father was a very educated man. His mother's brother, Raphael Georg Kiesewetter, was a well-known music expert. He collected old musical items.
Ambros studied at the University of Prague. He learned a lot about music and art. These subjects were his greatest passion. However, he was expected to become a lawyer. He also had a career in the Austrian government. From 1839, he held important jobs in the justice department. Music was more of a hobby for him at first.
Music Career and Famous Works
From 1850, Ambros became known as a critic. He also wrote many essays. In 1860, he started working on his most important book. It was called History of Music. This huge work was published in parts starting in 1862. It had five volumes in total. The last two parts were finished by other experts after he passed away.
From 1869 to 1871, Ambros taught music history. He was a professor in Prague. He also helped manage the Prague Royal Conservatory. This was a famous music school.
By 1872, he moved to Vienna. He worked for the Department of Justice there. He also taught music to Prince Rudolf, who was the son of the emperor. His work allowed him to travel. He could take half a year off to collect musical information. This information was used for his History of Music book.
Ambros was a very good pianist. He also wrote many musical pieces. His compositions often reminded people of the music by Felix Mendelssohn.
August Wilhelm Ambros died in Vienna, Austria. He was 59 years old.
