Auguste Honoré Charlois (born November 26, 1864 – died March 26, 1910) was a French astronomer. He is famous for discovering many asteroids. He worked at the Nice Observatory in southeastern France. During his career, he found 99 asteroids.
Discovering Asteroids
Auguste Charlois made his first asteroid discovery in 1887. It was an asteroid named 267 Tirza. At first, astronomers looked for asteroids by eye through telescopes. This was a slow process.
In 1891, another astronomer, Max Wolf, started using a new method. He used astrophotography, which means taking pictures of the sky. This made finding asteroids much faster. Both Wolf and Charlois used this new technique. Because of it, they discovered many more asteroids than before.
Auguste Charlois received important awards for his work. In 1899, he got the Prix Jules Janssen. This is a top award from the French astronomical society. He also won the Valz Prize in 1889. This award was from the French Academy of Sciences. He earned it for his work on figuring out the paths of asteroids.
A Tragic End
Sadly, Auguste Charlois passed away at the age of 45. His death was due to a family conflict. This conflict was related to an inheritance. The person responsible for his death was found guilty. They faced legal consequences for their actions.
Memorial
To honor Auguste Charlois, an asteroid was named after him. This asteroid is called 1510 Charlois. It was discovered in 1939 by André Patry. Patry also worked at the Nice Observatory.
