The Augustus Post House is a really old and important home in Hebron, Connecticut. People also call it the Hewitt House. It was built around 1820. This house is a great example of a building style called "Federal architecture." Many important people lived here, including local business owners and even a Governor of Connecticut! Because it's so special, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's officially recognized as a historic landmark.

About the Augustus Post House

The Augustus Post House is in the town of Hebron. You can find it at the corner of Main and Church Streets. It looks out towards a part of Hebron's old village green.

What the House Looks Like

This house is made of brick and has two and a half stories. It has four windows across the front. The roof has a pointed shape at the front. You'll also see four chimneys on the house. The main door is in the middle of the front. It has special narrow windows on the sides. Above the door, there's a cool, half-circle window with a fan-like design. A wooden addition extends from the back of the house.

Inside the House

Even though the inside of the house has been changed to be used as offices, many of its original details are still there. This shows how well it was built a long time ago.

History of the House and Its Owners

The Augustus Post House was built around 1820. It's a great example of the "Federal style" of building. This style was popular in the United States after the American Revolution. It often used simple, balanced designs.

Captain Ezekiel Augustus Post

The house is named after Captain Ezekiel Augustus Post (1775-1854). He was a craftsman and fought in the War of 1812. Captain Post was married three times. He had seventeen children in total! Fourteen of his children lived to be adults. Interestingly, three of his children were also named Augustus. Captain Post was also the grandfather of Augustus Post, who was famous for his work with airplanes and cars. He even helped start the American Automobile Association (AAA).

Changes in Ownership

Building such a big house might have been expensive for Captain Post. He sold the house in 1824 to a local merchant. Over the years, many different people owned the house. One important owner was John S. Peters. He was a businessman who later became the Governor of Connecticut from 1831 to 1833. From the late 1800s until the 1970s, the Hewitt family owned the house. They ran a general store nearby.
