The Hebron Center Historic District is a special area in Hebron, Connecticut. It's like a time capsule showing how the town center looked and felt for a long time. This district is where the main roads, Route 66 and Route 85, meet. Since Hebron became a town in 1708, this spot has been its heart. In 1993, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important place to protect!

Exploring Hebron's Historic Center

A Look at Hebron's Past

The town of Hebron started way back in 1708. For most of its history, it was a farming community. In the early days, the town green was the most important place. It was where the colonial meeting house stood. Later, a tavern, a shop, and a mill were added nearby.

Today, the town green is split into smaller parts. This happened because roads like Route 66 were made wider in the 1900s. Sadly, many of Hebron's 18th-century buildings were lost in fires during the 1800s. Because of this, only a few houses from the early 1800s are still standing.

What You'll Find in the District

The historic district is centered around the meeting point of Route 66 and Route 85. Route 66 was an important main road long ago. The district stretches out a bit in most directions. It goes a little further east along Route 66. You can also find some historic houses on two side streets: Marjorie Circle and Wall Street.

The district includes 60 buildings that tell part of Hebron's story. These are called "contributing buildings." It also has the Hebron Green, which is now called Veterans Memorial Park. You can also see the remains of the old Hebron Town Pound. The cemetery of St. Peter's Episcopal Church is also part of the district.

There are also 19 newer buildings that don't contribute to the historic feel. Six war memorials are also on the green. Besides many 19th-century homes, the district includes several churches. The town's public library, called Douglas Library, is also a key part of this historic area.
