What Was the Austin K5 Used For?
The Austin K5 had different jobs during the war.
- Carrying Guns: Some K5 trucks had an open back. They were used to carry a special anti-tank gun. This gun was called the Ordnance QF 6 pounder. This setup was used a lot in the North African Campaign.
- General Transport: Other K5 trucks had an enclosed cab. These were used for general service (GS). This meant they carried supplies, equipment, and soldiers.
- Rescue Work: In the UK, some K5 trucks were used for salvage and rescue. They helped clear up damage and save people.
Why Was It Called the "Screamer"?
The Austin K5 had a funny nickname: the "Screamer." This was because of a part inside the truck. It was called the transfer case. This part helped the truck's wheels get power. But it made a very loud noise, like a scream!
