Austin George Meldon (born August 26, 1844 – died April 28, 1904) was a well-known Irish surgeon and writer. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (F.R.C.S.) and also held a Doctor of Letters (D.L.) degree. He made important contributions to medicine during his lifetime.

Austin Meldon's Medical Career
Austin Meldon started his medical journey by becoming a Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1864. This meant he was officially qualified to practice surgery. A year later, in 1865, he also became a Licentiate of the King and Queen's College of Physicians. This allowed him to practice as a physician.
Meldon's Medical Writings
Meldon wrote many important medical papers. These papers covered different health topics. He wrote about cholera, which is a serious disease. He also wrote about various diseases of the skin. Another area he focused on was gout, a type of arthritis.
Meldon was part of the British Medical Association. This is a group for doctors in the UK and Ireland. He attended their big yearly meeting in Dublin in 1887.
Meldon's Theory on Gout
Gout is a painful condition that affects joints. At the time, many doctors believed gout was mainly caused by too much uric acid in the body. However, Austin Meldon had a different idea.
He developed his own "neuro-humoral theory." This theory suggested that gout and another condition called rheumatism were linked to problems with the nervous system. He believed that a "depressed condition" of the nervous system played a big role in these diseases.
Meldon's Family Life
Austin Meldon was married twice during his life. He had a family with two sons and one daughter. His sons were named George Edward Pugin Meldon and James Austin Meldon.
Meldon was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin. This is a famous cemetery where many important Irish people are buried.
Awards and Recognition
Austin Meldon received several important awards for his studies. He earned two gold medals at the Catholic University Medical School. These medals were for his excellent work in surgery and midwifery. He also won the first prize in anatomy.
After his studies, Meldon became a surgeon at Jervis Street Hospital. This was a well-known hospital in Dublin. He worked there as a surgeon until he retired.
