Horse (Equus ferus caballus)

The Australian Riding Pony is a special type of pony that was first developed in Australia during the 1970s. It's a mix of different horse types, mainly the British Riding Pony, the fast Thoroughbred, and the graceful Arabian. These ponies are known for their elegant looks and athletic abilities.

What Makes Australian Riding Ponies Special?

Australian Riding Ponies are like smaller, very elegant versions of show horses. They were bred to look beautiful and move gracefully, much like the English Riding Pony.

How Tall Are They?

These ponies usually stand between 12.2 and 14.2 hands tall. To give you an idea, one hand is about 4 inches (or 10.16 cm). So, they are not too big, making them perfect for younger riders. In comparison, the Australian Pony breed is a bit smaller, never growing taller than 14 hands.

What Do They Look Like?

Australian Riding Ponies have a smooth, flowing way of moving. They often have smaller heads and ears, which adds to their refined look. You'll usually see them in solid colors, meaning they are one color all over, like bay, chestnut, or black.

The History of the Australian Riding Pony

Horses and ponies are not originally from Australia. They were brought there by people. The Australian Riding Pony breed was created by carefully choosing and breeding certain imported horses.

How the Breed Started

Some important horses that helped create this breed include:

  • Aristocrat of Flawforth: This pony was brought to Australia in 1973. His mother was a mix of a Thoroughbred and a Welsh Pony.
  • Treharne Talisman and The Laird: Both of these ponies were sons of a famous horse named Bwlch Valentino. The Laird was imported to South Australia.

Forming the Society

Around 1980, people became very interested in the Riding Ponies shown at big horse events called Royal Shows. Because of this interest, the Australian Riding Pony Stud Book Society was formed. This group helps keep track of the ponies and makes sure the breed stays true to its standards.

At first, there were different sections for ponies to be registered. To be in the main section, a pony needed to have at least three generations of approved breeds in its family tree. Today, many of the best British and New Zealand Riding Pony bloodlines are part of the Australian Riding Pony family. Modern breeding methods, like artificial insemination, have helped bring in even more good bloodlines.

What Are Australian Riding Ponies Used For?

Today, Australian Riding Ponies are very popular. They are often ridden by children in competitions, but smaller adults also enjoy riding them.

Popular Activities

These versatile ponies are great at many different horse sports, including:

  • Dressage: This is like horse ballet, where the pony and rider perform a series of movements.
  • Show jumping: Ponies jump over obstacles in a course.
  • Combined driving: This involves a pony pulling a cart through different challenges.
  • Gymkhana: Fun, fast-paced games on horseback.
  • Mounted games: Team games played on ponies, often involving speed and skill.
  • Horse shows: Competitions where ponies are judged on their looks, movement, and manners.
