Austrogomphus is a special group of dragonflies that live only in Australia. They are often called hunters because of how they catch their food. These dragonflies are usually small to medium-sized. They have black bodies with cool yellowish patterns.
Meet the Austrogomphus Dragonflies
Austrogomphus dragonflies are a unique type of insect found only in Australia. They belong to a family of dragonflies called Gomphidae. You can spot them by their dark bodies, which are usually black, with bright yellow markings. These markings can look like stripes or spots.
These dragonflies are known for being excellent hunters. They fly quickly and skillfully to catch other insects in the air. They are an important part of the Australian ecosystem.
Different Kinds of Austrogomphus Dragonflies

The Austrogomphus group includes many different species, like different types of dogs in one family. Scientists have organized them into smaller groups called subgenera. Each species has its own unique features and often a fun common name.
Here are some examples of the many Austrogomphus species:
- Austrogomphus angelorum - also known as the Murray River hunter
- Austrogomphus australis - the inland hunter
- Austrogomphus cornutus - called the unicorn hunter because of a horn-like feature
- Austrogomphus guerini - the yellow-striped hunter, which is quite common
- Austrogomphus ochraceus - known as the jade hunter
- Austrogomphus pusillus - a very tiny hunter
There are also species like the pale hunter, dark hunter, and fork hunter, each with their own special look.
What Does the Name Austrogomphus Mean?
The name Austrogomphus has a cool meaning! It comes from two different words.
The first part, Austro-, comes from the Latin word auster. This word means "south wind," and it refers to the south, like Australia. So, it tells us where these dragonflies are found.
The second part, -gomphus, comes from the Greek word gomphus (γόμφος). This word means "peg" or "nail." It's thought that the shape of the male dragonfly's tail looks a bit like a peg or a bolt used in building ships.
Another group of dragonflies is called Gomphus. Austrogomphus dragonflies are similar to them, and both belong to the larger Gomphidae family. In 1854, a scientist named Edmond de Sélys Longchamps gave the name Austrogomphus. He probably chose it because it was a "southern" or "Australian" part of the Gomphus family.
